  2. I have just recently begun to suspect Romany ancestry. What a suprise for me! My g-g grandfather's name was Roumaine Gilbert- a labourer from Detroit and his wife Mary Maude Gilbert. There has long been some mystery about this family and there was a big custody dispute involving custody of my grandmother born of a Canadian father and Lena or Maude GILBERT (of Detroit) who was so attached to her mother (Mary Maude) that she left my great-grandfather taking my grandmother(Phyllis) with her. My great grandfather, Percy Brock, took her back and won custody. I always thought it odd that a father would win custody of a child in about 1912 or sometime. I wonder if Romany ancestry had something to do with it. If Mar Maude was Romany and her mother before her and so on then there are Romanies all the way back along the female line. That would be amazing to find out.

  3. Hello! My name is Jamie, and I am the head clerk at our local library. We have had a request for information about a local legend that revolves around a gypsy named Miranda Cooper. I have checked local records and have searched Ancestry.com extensively to no avail. I was just wondering if you could direct me to any information. The only information we have is that she stayed here in Marshall, Illinois and that she passed away on March 3, 1934. Thank you for your time.

  9. My name is Mandi Hagley Allison. I am a Gypsy Shaman, or chovihauni. My father was Stan Hagley and his father Stan Hagley, a gypsy and hawker from 35 Forster Road Croydon, a travellers area near Mitcham Common. His mother was Violet Hagley nee Smith, a Gypsy. She may have been known as Violet Doyle. They travelled around Kent hop picking. They had an aitchin tan in Dover and Maidstone. My dad was traumatically separated from his parents, brothers and sisters by the system in 1935. He was sent, alone, with no family, to Barnado's in Stephney Causeway. He was fostered out in Fordham,Cambridgeshire. His mother Violet married a Doyle at some point.

On the day before his 13th birthday he was abruptly removed from his foster parents by Dr Barnadoes and sent to Russell Coates naval school, Dorset before being heavily persuaded by the training school to join the Merchant Navy as a deck boy. I and my mother have found in text books of my fathers from that time a message written by my dad. He wrote the truth, that he was a genuine gypsy shaman, chovihauni, and wanted to be employed as a healer, not a sailor. He told me that many times.

Although technically my dad was separated from his family and culture in reality he visted lilian Doyle, his sister, and often went travelling with her and her family in the kent area. He also reunited with his half brother Edward Law and his sister Rose Hagley and Emily Doyle.Rose Hagley had been brought up by a Mrs Edwards, possibly related, in Maidstone.Emily and Lily Doyle sent to Aldersbrook Homes, Wanstead where they grew up. Edward stayed with his mother

His mother's parents were Jack and Emily Smith, nee lee born 1876 and 1883 of Skellington Road, East Ham, london. His maternal Uncles were John Smith born1903,and William Smith born 1918. Maternal aunts Amy Smith 1899, Lily Thompson, Gladys Smith, Ivy Smith born 1920.

He was loyal to his Romany culture and brought me up in the same traditions( the opposite of capitalism ). I am proud to be a Romany shaman I believe Gypsys have been persecuted because the ethnic group so intelligent and morally good that a jealous minority used Gypsies as scapegoats for their own mistakes. My dad often spoke of taking me on the road and I, my father and mother were going to do just that when he was tragically killed in a terrible accident at sea.

I am very proud of my Romany culture and of my dad. I admired him so much. I was only 9 when he died . I had so much to learn about him. However neither I or my mother know the whereabouts of my fathers relatives or descendents. I know I cannot bring my dadus back but I hope to learn more of his story. All of my family have had enough of trauma from prejudice.! We are all very sensitive souls. We want to be well, free of prejudice. We enjoy our family, being shaman, our gypsy traditions and Romany stories.I and my mother have been trying to be reunited with dads relatives since he died.My mother never remarried after my dad, her loyal husband, died. My dad called my mum Ruthie. Barnados was a problem to us as they would not release details of his time there. Finally we were sent information about my father and our relatives.Years ago I spoke to Tom Lee ( secretary of the Romany Guild ) who agreed with what my father had told me. My family was related to him and the Lees of Canning Town. He was going to tell me more when unfortunately he passed on.

We hope and pray the way can be cleared for relatives to remember our story. If anyone has contact details of any of our genuine gypsy relatives settled or not, who want to be reunited please inform my loving husband, Roger Hagley Allison via HagleyAllison@hotmail.co.uk.Or phone him on 07913658295. We only want to communicate with family or those genuinely trying to help us, please. Thank you very much for understanding. We guarentee not to waste your time

Kushti Bok and healing prayers to all good souls.

From our Gypsy Chovihauni (all of us are shaman ) family.

  16. Hi! I'm am happy to find this site... The reason why I was surfing the net looking for romanie people and where they settled in the US and Canada, is because I would like to visit them... To the best of my knowledge, I am not romani, but Celtic and Germanic, but, who knows... If there were Gypsies settling in Germany and Denmark where my father's side is from, who knows...

    Anyway :0)

May I ask where the gypsies live in Canada and the US near to Canada? I am living in Western Canada at this point..

    Thank you!!

  17. Hi,this isnt really a family history query, more like a general hunch. If you look closely at the early Vardos used in the states by the gypsies, there seems to be a strong distinctive similiarity with the covered wagons used by the early settlers, many of whom were of irish tinker descent,Ray

    Hello Tiggi

Thanks for the information -which I have.

I obtained their birth certificate (Clara & Isabella 1872 under the name of Diton) and this is where I found out their parents names and tracked down that

    1) both mother & father had died 1873

    2) the family on the 1851 census of Plumstead Common Plumstead Kent-is 'my Dighton family'.

All the Dighton's are inter-related and I know I am related to those of Mitcham Common Surrey and in Kent. Because they are all related and go back to Jas (James) Dighton (died 1873) and his wife Eliz Lee Dighton (died 1850) from Plumstead Common Kent.

I have found them on various census 1841-1901 (England).

It is just frustrating not to know what happened to my great grandmothers twin sister (who was the older twin by 25 minutes!!) Clara Dighton.

Oral family history said that she went to either Canada or America.

Last known census reference was 1881 where Clara Dighton was living apart from her twin sister (for reason's unknown @ this stage) in a school /convelencence hospital in St Leonards Hastings Sussex.

She has totally disappeared from this point onwards. We know she definately did not die, but at what stage she left for either Canada /America is unknown.

Whether she married before she went - again we do not know.

So any help in tracking her down in either Canada or America would help put an end to this mystery and fill in the last space left on my Dad's Family Tree!

Thanks for help in this matter Tiggi - much appreciated and I will speak to you soon.

    Regards Elizabeth (Lee) Visser

  19. Hi I have looked for your Clara Dighton

I found both births for Clara and sister Isabella under name of Diton ( not spelt Dighton) June1872 Dartford Kent ( 2a 388)

I also found these records must be something to do with your family :

Birth : Lawrence Dighton March 1864 Dartford Kent 2a 300

    Death : Henry Dighton 1872- Sept 1885 Dartford Kent aged 13 2a 252

    Death : Dangerfield dighton 1870 - June1902 Dartford Kent aged 32 2a 287

Also take a look at this Census 1881 Mitcham Common Croydon London

    RG11-825-FOLIO150-P38

It mentions many families all Gypsies but there is Diton's registered again would think its your family line has a Soloman Diton 37 born 1844 in Plumstead Kent same area as your Clara

I am looking for her aboard but as yet not found her

    Hello

Looking for information on a Clara Dighton born 8/6/1872 Dartford Common (Plumstead) Kent.

Twin sister was Isabella Dighton (1872-1962) England.

Clara's (& twin sisters) parents were: Amy Cooper (died 1873) and Laurence (aka Belcher) Dighton (died 1873).

Clara (& Isabella) Dighton were the grandaughters of James (Jas) Dighton and Eliza Lee .

Eliza Lee Dighton died 1850 Kent.

On the 1851 census Jas (James) Dighton is living on Plumstead Common Kent. His son Laurence is ~ 9yrs old -this was Clara (& Isabella's) Dighton's father.

We have 'lost track ' of Clara Dighton after the 1881 census of England ( St Leonards Sussex).

Believed to have gone to either Canada or America.

Would love to find out what happened to her if possible?

    Regards Elizabeth (Lee) Visser
